Pedego Greater Long Beach: From Silver Ceiling to Silver Spin

How Boomer Beth Black rolled from gray cubicle to the great outdoors

A few years ago, Beth Black looked up from her cubicle at work and realized that she was being passed over for promotion because of her age. Though she received rave reviews for her work as a corporate writer, she discovered that she’d hit the “Silver Ceiling.” “It was unnerving, but I made a bold move and quit that job,” she said. “Happily, I quickly found my next move — the freedom and contentment of owning a Pedego Electric Bikes store.”

Her path to Pedego seemed predestined. “I didn’t have to give up writing,” she said. The final selling point for opening her own Pedego shop was that her cash register could double as a writing computer. So now, Beth arrives at her store — Pedego Greater Long Beach (GLB) — with a smile every day. “My life is full of happy people, bike rides, writing, and a huge sense of accomplishment — with literally no ceiling to limit my success,” she said. The decision to open Pedego GLB in Seal Beach, California, proved to be an excellent choice for Beth and her partner, Brian Ballard. The store’s 2013 Grand Opening Celebration drew hundreds of locals, including the Mayor of Seal Beach, who cut the ribbon. “From that day, we knew this was going to be a successful enterprise,” said Brian. “Everyone rushed to take a test ride!”

The success of Pedego GLB grew even more in 2014 when Beth wrote an essay about their store and won a national competition for a Time Warner Cable Business Class commercial. The store was one of four businesses chosen out of 200,000 submissions. Later that year, Time Warner released a national TV and Online ad campaign featuring Pedego Greater Long Beach. The results of this campaign helped Beth and Brian achieve several business goals and also garnered the couple a special award from Irvine-based Pedego Electric Bikes. “At Pedego’s annual Dealers Meeting last year, they awarded us the honor of MVP,” explained Beth. “We’re so happy!”

Brian, a professional magician and Community Outreach liaison for a senior HMO, has used his presentation skills and organizational talents in building the store with Beth. “We knew that with our combined abilities and experience, we could make the store a success and a valuable part of the community,” he said. That includes special Pedego events such as the “Silver Spin,” a weekly guided group ride for seniors and friends. Beth and Brian are delighted they are sharing the freedom of electric bikes with other Boomers. ”As Boomers ourselves, we can share our first-hand stories about the health benefits of riding Pedego electric bikes, which include losing weight, getting fit, lowering blood pressure, controlling diabetes and boosting immunity,” said Brian.

Beth agreed, “We’re so grateful to have rolled forward to life as Pedego storeowners. It’s a complete infusion of enthusiasm and power over our future — with each day as a bright new beginning,” said Beth. “I used to dream of an office with a window so I could see a little daylight.  Now, I balance between writing and riding … out in the sunshine, fresh air and the Great Outdoors. Hello, fun!”
